OCTOBER 19th  MARCHMONT ASSOCIATION presents

Illustrated London News – 12.12.1891

Witness the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to Emmeline, Sylvia and Christabel Pankhurst by Dr Helen Pankhurst, Emmeline’s great-great granddaughter, on Friday 19th October from 2 pm, at the site of their former Bloomsbury home, on the corner of Russell Square and Bernard Street.

The family lived at 8 Russell Square in 1888-93. The house was demolished in 1894 to make way for the Hotel Russell, recently re-opened as The Principal London Hotel, where the plaque is to be unveiled. This is an important event celebrating 100 years since some women won the right to vote.

A Conference of the Women’s Franchise League, lasting three evenings, was held in the Drawing Room of 8 Russell Square, the home of Dr and Mrs Pankhurst, in December 1891. It demanded no less for women than “equal civil and political rights with men”.

This event is brought to you by the Marchmont Association in association with Bloomsbury Festival 2018, the theme of which is Activists and Architects of Change – inspired by the centenary of The Representation of the People Act 1918, which permitted women to vote for the first time.

The plaque and unveiling event is sponsored by The Principal London
