The photos above show the new pedestrian route through Cartwright Gardens into Burton Place, and a historical photo taken in 1970 of the ‘Private Gardens’ notice in the gardens.

Just before the end of last year – Monday 19th December – the Gardens were officially opened to the general public after 200 years as a private space.

The gardens have also been upgraded under the terms of a legal agreement between Camden Council and the University of London, leaseholders and managers of the gardens. All four tennis courts have been refurbished and are available to book by local residents via the reception in the new Garden Halls opposite.

Another important improvement is the introduction of new set of gates on the west side of the gardens, which provide the new pedestrian link into Burton Place and beyond.

A ‘history board’ has also been installed, based on research carried out by the Marchmont Association.
